Historic Horse Racing Date: 26 September 1891

26 September 1891 marks a significant date in the history of horse racing in Mauritius.

Following a devastating equine epidemic that had swept across the island, the Mauritius Turf Club was forced to leave the Champ de Mars. On this day, they organized the very first horse race meeting in Mont Choisy, featuring races such as the famous Choisy’s Plate.

The event was of such importance that Mauritians travelled from all corners of the island using every means available: by steamboats, pirogues (small boats), carriages drawn by horses or oxen, and even on foot for the most passionate fans. This day was when horses truly began writing a part of Mauritian history here.

Today, this heritage is transforming. We are launching Les Écuries de Mont Choisy (The Stables of Mont Choisy): a place where the horse is no longer a symbol of competition, but of leisure, discovery, and connection with nature.

More than just a return to its roots, a new page is turning. It is a space for families, enthusiasts, and the curious, where authentic moments are shared, surrounded by history.

134 years later, the story of The Stables of Mont Choisy continues, with you.
